Faculty Orientation 101
ABOUT:
This standalone sandbox course features instructional videos and written tutorials that will help you become familiar with the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). You will also find submissions by a demo student that will allow you to practice grading, editing, and creating your own course content.
REQUIRED TEXTS:
None; all reading is provided in the course modules and via links to outside resources.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By successfully completing all the required tasks in this course, you will be able to:
- Update your profile; adding a bio and photo, and edit your notification preferences.
- Communicate in your course; make announcements, use the inbox, create calendar events, and record video directly in Canvas.
- Grade assignments using a rubric and the Speedgrader.
- Understand quiz settings options and different quiz question types.
- Create a group, enable student collaborations, and host a conference.
- Create and edit course components; add content, change due dates etc.
- Locate additional help and resources
GRADE BREAKDOWN:
All self-paced course assignments are worth 1 point to represent Complete or Not Complete. The completion of all suggested tasks constitutes successfully passing this orientation course.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Module 1 – Getting Started
The first module has videos and content related to navigating in the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). You will learn how to set up your profile and how to navigate in your courses.
Module 2 –Communications
The second module covers a variety of ways to communicate with students in your course.
Module 3 - Grading
This section has demo content for you to practice grading in your course. You will grade an assignment and a discussion posting, provide written and video feedback, and use the Speedgrader.
Module 4 – Collaborations
This module is all about organizing your students into groups to do collaborative work. It will also cover how to create a web conference.
Module 5- Course Building
This module is about course building & editing in the LMS.
