102

Welcome to our English 102 course!  My name is Alexis McMillan-Clifton, and you're welcome to address me as Alexis.

We're trying out Canvas this quarter, which is a new online classroom format that all courses at TCC will eventually move to.  Take some time to try out the new features, and let me know the exciting discoveries you make.  I'm still finding new things to love about this system every day.

You'll want to begin by checking out the Start Here module, as well as the Week Zero module.

On the left side of the classroom, you'll see the Navigation bar.  Here's a bit more about each option:

house HOME: this lovely page you'll see each time you enter the classroom

announceANNOUNCEMENTS: what's currently going on in the class.  I'll update this 2 or more times a week.

checklistMODULES: this is where all the "meat" of the course lives.  All the course content, from reading requirements to discussions to assignments, is all put together in chronological order here.  This is where you'll spend most of your time this quarter.

grades GRADES: a snapshot of graded content; will be updated continually throughout the quarter

syllabus SYLLABUS: a contract between you and me about what this class's expectations will be.  Refer to it as frequently as you wish throughout the quarter--it has a lot of meaning beyond just the first day of class

discussion DISCUSSIONS:  all discussion forums for the quarter; some are graded and some are optional.  These are also available in the Modules section, and I'd recommend you use the Modules links to discussions most of the time.  This link is best if you're looking to return to a specific conversation that you've already participated in.

assignments ASSIGNMENTS: all assignments for the quarter.  As with Discussions, these are also available in the Modules section, and I'd recommend that you use the Modules links to reach assignments most of the time.  This link is best if you're looking to return to a specific assignment that you've already begun.

people PEOPLE: a way to see everyone else in the class, including the instructor and fellow classmates.  Contact information is available here.

chat CHAT: talk in a web forum with anyone else in the class who's online at the same time

conferences CONFERENCES: a way to communicate online with specific members of the class

outcome OUTCOMES: what you'll be able to accomplish by the end of an assignment, module, and class

If you have any problems at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.  You can use the "People" tab on the left, or email me directly at amcmillan-clifton@tacomacc.edu.
