Picking an Article for the Summary Essay

Please review the details for the Summary Assignment (Essay #1).  

Just like any writing project, completing this essay will involve a series of steps.  These will include, specifically:

1. Choosing one of the 3 articles to summarize
   
2. Familiarizing yourself with the thesis and supporting details of your chosen article
3. Determining which aspects of this article are the most important for an outsider to be familiar with in order to have a complete understanding of the work
4. Drafting your summary to show these important details in a neutral point of view 

We will be working on this project in increments, so that it all comes as comfortably together as possible for you.

We'll start by focusing exclusively on steps 1& 2 of the list above.  For this assignment, I'd like you to write 1-2 paragraphs that tell me

• which of the 3 articles you've chosen to summarize
• why you picked this article.  What about it appealed to you? 
• what you feel this article's thesis is, either as a quote (include borrowed language inside quotation marks) or as a paraphrase in your own words
• what personal reaction you have to this article's ideas.  Remember, you won't include personal reactions in the summary essay itself--this is a chance to vent your opinions now and get it out of the way
• any questions you have at this point about the essay assignment

If you decide that you want to change articles after you submit this assignment, you can, but you'll need to complete this assignment AGAIN with your new topic before I'll accept Essay #1 for a grade.
